Getting the Most Out of Your Safety Budget

Yesterday, we looked at the first three of five steps for planning and conducting top-notch safety meetings. Today we pick up with steps 4 and 5, and we invite you to try a money-saving resource for meeting all of your safety training and compliance needs.

(The first three steps to memorable safety meetings, courtesy of Safety.BLR.com, can be found here.)

Step 4: Reinforce your message. Because the whole point of a safety meeting is to communicate important information, it’s not just what you say and do that matters, but what goes on inside the heads of employees at the meeting. They have to hear and remember your message, or you’ve wasted your time.

So right up front, clearly state the purpose of the meeting. Once or twice during the meeting remind employees why they’re here. Repeat your training objectives at the end of the meeting as well. Ask questions during the meeting to make sure your message is getting across. And leave some time at the end for employees to ask questions.

Also, send them away with a handout. It doesn’t have to be fancy. A simple list of key points made during the meeting, the steps in a procedure, or a chart of hazards and precautions is all they need. Encourage employees to post the takeaway at their workstation as a daily safety reminder.

Step 5: Follow up. Even when the meeting’s over, you’re not quite finished yet. The last step in producing successful safety meetings is to check back with employees after the meeting to make sure they’re practicing what you preached. Observe, remind, correct, and encourage with positive feedback.
