OSHA Takes Steps to Prevent Violence in Healthcare Workplaces

OSHA has launched a new Web page to help employers and employees understand and address violence in hospitals and other healthcare settings. Find out more about this worsening problem and what can be done.

From 2002 to 2013, the rate of serious workplace violence incidents was more than four times greater in health care than in private industry on average. According to OSHA, health care accounts for nearly as many serious violence injuries as all other industries combined. But the safety agency says these incidents can be prevented when employers build and implement a comprehensive workplace violence program.

To assist in that effort, OSHA has collected resources and strategies at https://www.osha.gov/dsg/hospitals/workplace_violence.html. The material complements OSHA’s Guidelines for Preventing Workplace Violence for Healthcare and Social Service Workers, updated earlier this year.
