A Drug-Free Workplace Is a Safer Workplace

Yesterday, we listed a number of steps you can take to promote Drug-Free Work Week. Today, we continue with some more ideas for making Drug-Free Work Week a memorable occasion.

To take full advantage of this wonderful opportunity to increase awareness of workplace substance abuse, why not try one or more these ideas next week?

  • Feature Drug-Free Work Week in your employee newsletter or on your website. Articles could cover a range of topics, including general information about substance abuse and its impact in the workplace environment, sources of help for workers with substance abuse problems, and actions workers can take if they think a colleague may have a substance abuse problem.
  • Distribute a payroll message. Paychecks are one thing that every employee pays attention to! Focus attention on Drug-Free Work Week by including a leaflet or message with next week’s paychecks listing sources of help for those with substance abuse problems or a simple reminder that it is Drug-Free Work Week and a good time to re-commit to working drug-free.
  • Hold a social event celebrating safety and health. A social event with plenty of food, fun, and nonalcoholic drinks can help reinforce the importance of being drug-free to workplace safety. Such an event will also remind workers that alcohol is not necessary to unwind and relax. The theme for a Drug-Free Work Week social event could highlight general health and wellness, with door prizes such as gift certificates for local health clubs or recreational activities.

If you need drug-free workplace training, you need BLR’s Total Training Resource: Drug-Free Workplace, a comprehensive training course that provides all the information you need to promote a drug-free work environment. Try it at no cost or risk.

The Drug-Free Workplace—It’s the Law

In preparation for Drug-Free Work Week, it’s a good idea to think about what kind of training you have available to improve employee awareness of substance abuse hazards and the steps workers can take to overcome this serious safety problem.

Congress has made maintaining a drug-free workplace everybody’s duty—or you risk losing federal contracts. That means you need a training program that teaches supervisors and employees all they need to know about the law, its requirements, and how to recognize and deal with substance abuse in the workplace.

The Total Training Resource: Drug-Free Workplace is a comprehensive training course that provides employees and supervisors valuable information for promoting a drug-free work environment. The computer based training (CBT) course includes PowerPoint® presentations and other classroom training meetings.
