HazMat Training: Covering All the Bases

Who’s Your Audience?

Safety training must be given to employees who handle or transport packages containing hazardous materials, including warehouse workers. But, it’s also required for drivers, crew members, and others who would be exposed to hazardous materials if they were in an accident.

You have to provide general awareness, including security awareness training, to:

  • All new employees who will handle hazardous materials at the facility (within 90 days after employment)
  • Existing HAZMAT employees who have not received training within the previous 3 years
  • All employees introduced to new hazardous materials in their work area

How Often Should You Train?

HAZMAT employers must provide training to HAZMAT employees at least once every 3 years. This includes security awareness training, which must also be provided at least once every 3 years.

Pass or Fail Training?

According to DOT, “any test that ensures that the employee can perform the assigned duties in compliance with DOT’s HAZMAT regulations is acceptable.” Training and testing may be accomplished in a variety of ways: performance, written, verbal, or a combination of these. The requirements do not state that the employee must “pass” a test; however, an employee may only be certified in areas in which he or she can successfully perform his or her HAZMAT duties.

Keeping Training Records

A record of current training inclusive of the preceding 3 years must be created and retained for each HAZMAT employee for as long as the employee is employed by that employer and for 90 days thereafter. The record must include:

  • The HAZMAT employee’s name
  • The most recent training completion date of the HAZMAT employee’s training
  • A description, copy, or the location of the training materials used to meet the requirements
  • The name and address of the person providing the training
  • Certification that the HAZMAT employee has been trained and tested, as required
