Feds Announce New Push to Prosecute Worker Protection Violations

The United States government says it’s going after those who criminally endanger the lives and health of workers. Keep reading to learn about this important new effort to hold employers accountable for their actions.

The Departments of Labor and Justice jointly announced a plan to more effectively investigate and prosecute workplace safety and environmental crimes. Deputy Labor Secretary Chris Lu commented, “Workplace injuries and illnesses cause an enormous amount of physical, financial, and emotional hardship for workers and their families and underscore the urgent need for employers to provide a safe workplace for their employees.” The new initiative demonstrates a renewed commitment by both federal agencies “to utilize criminal prosecution as an enforcement tool to protect the health and safety of workers,” he added.

As HSE Consultant, I have always mentioned this to all companies, the importance to manage accountability within the company structure (Line Management responsibility), making all Project Managers, Superintendents and last but not least the workers for all incidents that occur in their area of responsibility, I sincerely hope someday all companies will understand this very important issue.
