NIOSH Examines Debilitating Hearing Conditions

Hearing loss can have a debilitating impact on a worker’s life. Get the latest here on a new study from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) of conditions that affect workers exposed to occupational noise.

The study, published by the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, examines hearing difficulty and tinnitus, two prevalent conditions. NIOSH says hazardous noise affects approximately two million U.S. workers. Many cases of hearing loss are due to occupational noise exposures. The conditions can adversely impact work, interpersonal relationships, and quality of life. Tinnitus, known as ringing in the ears, is the perception of sound in one or both ears or in the head when there is no other source of sound in the environment. Tinnitus often occurs together with hearing loss.
