The grants are awarded to organizations with innovative approaches to make roadways safer and eliminate preventable roadway deaths—the mission of the Road to Zero initiative. Eight winners were announced in late March, and funding for three more recipients is made possible through funds from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

The announcement comes just as the report, A Road to Zero: A vision for achieving zero roadway deaths by 2050, is released, providing a roadmap for eliminating fatalities and saving lives in the next 30 years.

The three organizations receiving grants through the new funding from FHWA are:

  • Institute of Transportation Engineers; Vision Zero Network: Moving from Conversation to Action—A Scalable Training Resource on Speed Management
  • National Complete Streets Coalition, Smart Growth America: Safe Street, Smart Cities Academy
  • University of Michigan: Addressing Socioeconomic Disparities in Motor-Vehicle Fatalities

To qualify for a Safe System Innovation Grant, an organization must clearly explain how its program will improve safety on the roadways, set a timeframe for the reduction, outline how the program will be evaluated and detail how the organization intends to reach its target audience, among other elements.

The Road to Zero initiative was launched in October 2016 as a joint effort between the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the FHWA, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and NSC. The goal is to eliminate roadway deaths by 2050. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at the Department of Transportation committed $3 million—$1 million annually from 2017-2019—to fund Safe System Innovation Grants, and NSC is managing the grant process. The Federal Highway Administration committed an additional $500,000 in 2018 to specifically fund these three additional grant recipients.
