Here are the key steps you must take to recharge your forklifts safely and effectively:
Before Disconnecting the Battery:
- Turn off the ignition.
- Turn off all lights and accessories.
- Apply the parking brake.
- Make sure all vent caps are in place.
- Open the battery compartment cover to dissipate the heat and gases generated during truck operation.
Maintaining a Safe Charging Station:
- Make sure the battery charging area is well ventilated.
- Prohibit smoking.
- Make sure there are no other open flames, sparks, or welding in the area.
- Have equipment for flushing and neutralizing spilled electrolyte.
- Have fire protection equipment and first aid supplies nearby, and an emergency shower and eyewash station close at hand.
Charging a Battery:
- Verify that the charger has the correct voltage and capacity.
- Make sure cord and plug connected battery chargers are grounded or double insulated.
- Shut off the charger when connecting or disconnecting the battery.
- Allow batteries to cool down after charging.
- Check at least two cells of a battery with a hydrometer after charging to make sure the battery is fully charged.
- Only add water or electrolyte to a battery after charging.
- Be careful not to spill electrolyte or add water too quickly.
Do not overcharge a battery—overcharging will substantially reduce battery life.
