As part of their Clean Air Act (CAA) responsibilities to implement the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), state and local air agencies must monitor for the presence of NAAQS pollutants (formally, criteria air pollutants) in the ambient air and report the monitored data to the EPA. The relevant regulations at 40 CFR Part 58 last received a major revision in 2006.
The EPA has now issued a new set of significant amendments, which, says the Agency, are needed to ensure that the regulations keep pace with technological developments. The changes, which take effect April 27, 2016, are also intended to reduce the burdens for reporting agencies, says the EPA.
