With is promulgation of standards to control emissions of methane from new, reconstructed, and modified sources in the oil and gas (O&G) sector, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has taken a significant step toward meeting President Obama’s goal of cutting methane released by the entire sector by 40 to 45 percent by 2025.
The methane strategy, which includes recognition of substantial voluntary actions taken by the O&G industry, is one of the top elements in the president’s program to exert downward pressure on emissions of man-made greenhouse gases (GHGs) that exacerbate changes to the earth’s climate. Over a 100-year period, methane is about 25 times more effective than carbon dioxide (CO2) at trapping heat within the atmosphere.
