Falls continue to be a huge problem in all industries, but especially in construction. As we head into another busy summer construction season, the Song of the Week comes from Faith No More and its 1989 funk-metal hit “Falling to Pieces.”
The San Francisco band had been together with various lineups for nearly a decade before adding singer Mike Patton in time for 1989’s The Real Thing album. The album was out for more than six months before the single “Epic” blew up on MTV and propelled the band to stardom.
The next single off the album was “Falling to Pieces,” which is driven by a Billy Gould bassline and Patton’s frenetic vocals.
“Back and forth, I sway with the wind/Resolution slips away again/Right through my fingers, back into my heart/Where it’s out of reach and it’s in the dark/Sometimes I think I’m blind/Or I may be just paralyzed/Because the plot thickens every day/And the pieces of the puzzle keep crumbling away/But I know there’s a picture beneath.”
The song hit #92 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #40 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart. The band toured the album extensively over a few years, which contributed to moving to an entirely different art-metal sound on their next album, 1992’s Angel Dust. Faith No More released two more albums before splitting up in 1998. They reunited several times after 2009, releasing a new album in 2015.
