What can you expect from OSHA under David Michaels? Listen to what Michaels himself says in an article published in the winter 2009 edition of the New York Committee of Occupational Safety and Health’s newsletter.
Michaels said that OSHA “badly needs a change in direction and philosophy.” He also says that “the objective of the Obama Administration should not be better/smarter enforcement” but rather a “bold campaign to change the workplace culture of safety.”
In the same article Michaels suggests that OSHA should focus on four initiatives:
- A workplace injury and illness prevention program rule
- An increase in workplace health and safety capacity
- The development of a new electronic recordkeeping and reporting system
- A campaign to change the way the nation thinks about workplace safety

The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports that OSHA is “using an influx of new inspectors to crack down on businesses with workplace safety violations. The Chronicle cites 31 new staff appointments in the southeast region alone, with most in enforcement.
Furthermore, says the Chronicle, “Lawyers specializing in labor and employment issues are warning their business clients to be ready.”
