Workplace fatalities may be up nationwide, but California’s Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) released preliminary statistics for the state that show a 16 percent decline in workplace deaths from 2013 to 2014. The Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), a cooperative effort between the federal Bureau of Labor Statistic (BLS) and the states, shows a preliminary total of 334 fatal work injuries in California in 2014, compared to 396 in 2013. Hispanic and Latino worker deaths also decreased 35 percent, from 194 in 2013 to 127 in 2014. BLS data for the United States indicate a nationwide increase of 2 percent in the fatal injury total from 2013 to 2014.
