Four of the wealthiest and most influential tech companies in the world have jointly submitted an amicus brief supporting the EPA in the Agency’s defense in June 2016 of its Clean Power Plan (CPP) in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
Calling themselves “Tech Amici,” Amazon.com, Inc.; Apple Inc.; Google Inc.; and Microsoft Corporation say their experience “suggests that the CPP will provide considerable benefits to electricity purchasers and that the Plan will not only be good for the environment, it will be good for business.”
The case against the CPP is being led by 27 states, with support from over 150 industry and business entities, including many energy companies. Other states and a majority of local governments have come out in support of the CPP. Now, the collective $1.7 trillion market capitalization of the Tech Amici adds a strong boost to EPA’s argument that the CPP will neither endanger the economy nor threaten the reliability of the nation’s electric system. More use of renewable energy is a key building block in CPP’s guidelines to assist states in meeting their power plant carbon emissions reduction goals.
