Michigan OSHA (MIOSHA) is encouraging employers and employees “to use extreme care and safety diligence in all work activities.” Find out what’s behind this warning.
In 2015, MIOSHA recorded a total of 29 deaths. The third and fourth Michigan worker deaths of 2016 occurred late last month. On March 21, a 65-year-old was performing tree trimming for a private homeowner. He was working in a lift truck boom bucket about 15 feet above the ground and was not wearing fall protection. When the bucket fell, he fell out, too. The man was taken to the hospital where he died.
The next day, a 62-year-old excavator operator was clearing trees and debris as part of a sewer project. The operator dislodged a tree, which fell onto the cab of the excavator, killing the operator.
