Ready to Quit? Great! Here’s How …

Despite the Great American Smokeout and other efforts, the American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that about 43 million adults and many teenagers in the United States still smoke. Their smoking is responsible for nearly one in three cancer deaths, and one in five deaths from all causes. Another 8.6 million people are living with serious illnesses caused by smoking.

With so many people still smoking, some of them are bound to be your employees. Or maybe you’re a smoker yourself thinking about finally quitting.

Quitting 1-2-3

Here are a few quit smoking strategies employees can use on Thursday or whenever they are ready to quit.

1. Think about what smoking is doing to you.

  • ncreased risk of heart attack, stroke, and lung cancer
  • Coughing, shortness of breath, and risk of bronchitis and emphysema
  • Reduced resistance to colds and illness
  • Harm to nonsmokers around you and to unborn children

2. Think about the benefits of quitting.

  • Immediate and steady reduction of damage to lungs and heart
  • Reduced risk to nonsmokers
  • More money for important and enjoyable things

3. Set a date to stop smoking now. When it arrives:

  • Get rid of all smoking materials.
  • Find substitutes: exercising, deep breathing, drinking water, chewing gum.
  • Use a patch, gum, or inhaler, if appropriate.
  • Remind yourself that you’re getting healthier every minute of every day you don’t smoke.
  • Start thinking of yourself as a nonsmoker—now, and for the rest of your life.

If you can’t stop smoking now:

  • Smoke less and put off smoking every cigarette.
  • Buy cigarettes by the pack, and keep switching brands.
  • Imagine you’re a nonsmoker—what would that be like?
  • Try a nicotine patch, gum, or inhaler.
  • Remind yourself every day that you’re never too old, and it’s never too late, to quit.
