Energizing Safety Programs: Could These Strategies Work for You?

Yesterday, we introduced you to the employee-driven strategies the safety folks at Tropicana are using to energize their safety effort. Today, we’ll focus on some of their other notable safety programs.

Among other notable compliance and protection programs in place at Tropicana’s City of Industry plant in California are these:

Behavior observation. All employees and managers are required to perform two observations each week. Observations are based on a checklist of 10 readily observable behaviors. If unsafe actions are identified, they are addressed on the spot.

Cal/OSHA connection. The facility maintains a strong relationship with its Cal/OSHA consultant. In fact, the consultant knows Tropicana employees by name and is invited to plant celebrations.

Great news! BLR’s renowned Safety.BLR.com® website now has even more timesaving features. Take our no-cost site tour! Or better yet, try it at no cost or obligation for a full 2 weeks.

Hands-on training. Although training begins in the classroom (and is often led by employees), the real lessons are learned on the line. Trainees are asked to demonstrate what they’ve learned—for example, by actually conducting a machine hazard assessment.

Help from corporate. Tropicana is a subsidiary of PepsiCo, and the plant gets significant technical support from PepsiCo’s Quaker, Tropicana, Gatorade division. Annually, the division conducts an in-depth audit and offers assistance with filling in gaps. Safety leaders from each of the division’s 22 plants also regularly share best practices.

Such initiatives have put the City of Industry plant at the top if its division in terms of safety. The end goal is zero losses, which the plant last achieved in 2007.

"We’re on track to getting back to that," says plant health, safety, and environment manager Kyle Morton. He jokes about working himself out of a job, but he’s not entirely kidding. Like his colleagues at the plant, he’s a true believer in the benefits of an active, creative safety culture.
