Quitters Do Prosper!

This year’s 35th annual Great American Smokeout is Thursday, November 18. And yes, quitting smoking may be the only instance that breaks the tenet “Quitters never prosper!” Consider the benefits of quitting smoking:

  • Immediate and steady reduction of damage to lungs and heart
  • Reduced risk to nonsmokers around you
  • More money for important and enjoyable things

Ask your employees if these benefits sound prosperous to them!

The American Cancer Society sponsors this event and gives many useful tools and resources to help employees or their loved ones quit. Point them to the link at the end of the article for the Society’s website.

In the meantime, you can point out what smoking is doing to smokers or their loved ones:

  • Increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and lung cancer
  • Coughing, shortness of breath, and risk of bronchitis and emphysema
  • Reduced resistance to colds and illness
  • Harm to nonsmokers and to unborn children

Encourage smokers to set a date to stop smoking now. When it arrives:

  • Get rid of all smoking materials.
  • Find substitutes such as exercise, deep breathing, drinking water, chewing gum.
  • Remind yourself that you’re getting healthier every day.
  • Spend time in nonsmoking areas.

For employees who simply can’t stop smoking now, encourage them to:

  • Smoke less; put off smoking every cigarette.
  • Buy cigarettes by the pack, and keep switching brands.
  • Imagine you’re a nonsmoker.
  • Try a nicotine patch, gum, or inhaler.
  • Remind yourself that you’re never too old, and it’s never too late to stop.
