Caution—Gasoline! -Effective Safety Training

You have probably heard the old story about the guy who couldn’t see if his gasoline tank so empty, so he lit a match…you know the rest, and you know it’s not a happy ending.

When this kind of accident first took place, the victim was pitied—but also considered pretty darned stupid.  Yet even today, after hundreds of tragic incidents and warnings, virtually the same accident is still repeated many times a year.

Remember the basic safety rules concerning gasoline:

  • Never allow smoking, spark sources, or open flames where gasoline is being used.
  • Never use gasoline for cleaning purposes.  A nonflammable or nontoxic solvent should be used instead.
  • Always keep gasoline in approved containers and clearly identified.
  • Always be sure the engine has stopped and the area around the tank opening is cool before refueling.
  • Use care when filling a tank—if you spill more than a few drops, flush it away immediately.
  • Never get back into the vehicle while pumping gas. Flash fires have erupted when a person has started to remove the nozzle, causing static electricity to discharge. If you absolutely have to return to the vehicle, touch the metal door to discharge the static charge before touching the gas nozzle.
  • Gasoline is important to our way of life.  We see its importance in running our automobiles, boats, lawnmowers and other equipment.  So let’s keep it working for us, not against us.  Always treat it with caution!
