Colleges and universities play an important role in promoting workplace safety and health through degree and certificate courses and other programs aimed at working safety professionals. Today, we feature two such institutions.
Rochester Institute of Technology (RTI) is one of the institutions that teaches OTI Education Center courses. RTI is authorized to deliver more than 30 courses, primarily aimed at safety managers, employers, and employees.
About half the registrants are individuals who wish to become authorized to reach the OSHA 10- and 30-hour courses. Students who complete these courses receive continuing education units but not academic credit.
The schedule makes it easy for working professionals. Some are 1-day courses, but most are completed within 3 or 4 days. Costs range from $225 to $775.
According to Kitren VanStrander, RIT’s director of outreach education and training, course instructors include both independent contractors who are subject-matter experts and members of the academic faculty.
The university also offers certificate programs. "This is an additional credential we offer private-sector employers," says VanStrander. The innovative new certificate program allows safety professionals to create their own credential by designing a program that addresses specific workplace or career needs.

Keene State College offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in occupational safety and health applied sciences.
"The thrust of our academic program has shifted over the years," says Melinda Treadwell, dean of professional and graduate studies. "It’s gone from a compliance-directed approach to a program that focuses on compliance as a minimum, but also emphasizes leadership and management principles."
Treadwell says that today’s safety and health personnel need to be engaged in all aspects of a business—from production through customer satisfaction. They must help all workers perform more safely and must be able to communicate the importance of that job to upper management.
Keene State has enjoyed long-time status as an OTI Education Center and is now home to the New Hampshire OSHA consultation program.
