Six Years for Asbestos Violations

CAA violations: The owner of the contracting company hired a number of workers who had no training in asbestos removal and did not know they were being exposed to the asbestos while removing the copper pipes. When workers questioned him, he lied and told them the areas did not contain asbestos. He also ultimately lied to an OSHA inspector who came to the site to investigate allegations of illegal asbestos removal.
Penalty: $4,400 fine and 6 years in prison

Hefty Fine for Water Violations

CWA violations: According to EPA, some of the more serious violations were the discharges of hydrogen chloride, titanium tetrachloride, and iron chloride into the Delaware River. Other violations include the discharges of ores, along with overflow from the facility’s wastewater treatment plant’s neutralizers and clarifiers into the Delaware River.
Penalty: $500,000 fine

Recycler Violates RCRA, TSCA

Wisconsin: EPA Region 5
RCRA and TSCA violations: The recycler failed to maintain the facility in a manner that minimizes the possibility of a fire, explosion, or release of hazardous waste, as required by their RCRA permit. EPA also alleged the company violated federal TSCA rules on PCBs, including failure to document PCB storage, prepare spill prevention and control plans, and properly mark the PCB storage area.
Penalty: $54,000 fine

Drugmaker Violates EPCRA
Pharmaceutical manufacturer
Missouri: EPA Region 7
EPCRA violations: According to EPA Region 7, an inspection found that the facility failed to make a timely report to EPA and the state of Missouri on quantities of tetracycline hydrochloride that were manufactured, processed, or otherwise used at the facility during 2009.
Penalty: $44,623

Mining Activities Require Permit

Mining permit violations: According to Montana DEQ, the company conducted coal-mining prospecting activities at a site in Carbon County before obtaining a prospecting permit. The violation was observed during an inspection.
Penalty: $15,000 fine

UST violations: According to EPA, the owner/operator failed to report suspected releases within 24 hours, conduct corrosion tests every 3 years, monitor tanks every 30 days, provide adequate release detection for piping, maintain financial responsibility, and respond to information request letters.
Penalty: $55,000 fine
