BMPs for Your SWPPP Training Program

Here are some things you should be discussing with your employees in your SWPPP training sessions.

Good Housekeeping Practices

  • Pick up garbage, debris, or trash found in and around your work area and discard in appropriate disposal containers.
  •  Use brooms, shovels, vacuum cleaners, or leaf blowers to maintain clean floors and ground surfaces, both indoors and outdoors.

  • Make sure outdoor trash cans are covered and protected from the rain. Empty them at least weekly.
  • Inspect and clean chemical material-handling areas each time a chemical is unloaded or handled.
  • Inspect forklifts, trucks, and other vehicles for leaks at the beginning of each work shift.
  • Confirm that emergency contact information is immediately accessible.
  • Make sure empty containers are available for any spilled material in the event of an accidental release.

Preventive Maintenance Practices

  • Routinely inspect pipes, pumps, storage tanks, pressure vessels, pressure relief valves, and process and material-handling equipment for corrosion, cracks, or other damage that could cause a spill or leak.
  • Promptly repair or replace defective equipment found during any inspection. Keep necessary spare parts on hand to avoid downtime.
  • Routinely empty oil containers associated with oil/water separators.
  • Change filters on filtration devices.
  • Make sure all stormwater drain paths are clear
  • Clear clogged drains.
  • Keep records of preventive maintenance activities in order to document maintenance inspections, repairs, and other preventive maintenance activities that you conduct.
  • Make sure floor drains are closed.
  • Make sure drip pans are in place for vehicles that routinely drip oil.
