Arc Flash Safety: PPE

Note: This article originally appeared on Safety.BLR.com here.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is critical to arc flash safety. PPE does nothing to prevent arc flash events from happening. Instead, it helps to reduce possible injury to the worker should an event take place. PPE can only be effective, however, if the worker is wearing it!

Employees should be reminded that not all PPE is the same. For electrical workers, special types of PPE have been developed, and workers must use the appropriate type of PPE in order to protect themselves.

Some of the more common items found on a PPE list include:

  • Helmet or headgear
  • Arc-rated face shield
  • Safety glasses
  • Rated gloves
  • Rated shoes/boots
  • Rated flame-resistant clothing
  • No metal button, clasps, or zippers

Wear the following PPE that is rated for the electrical protection level required for the particular operation before entering the flash protection boundary:

Helmet or headgear, along with face shield that is rated for the type of operation. Workers must also wear approved safety glasses, rated gloves, and rated shoes or boots.

In addition, they may also need to wear rated flame-resistant clothing. Workers should not wear outer clothing made of cotton or synthetic materials (such as nylon, acetate, or rayon) because it can burn or melt onto skin. Use cotton for undergarments only.

Remember not to wear metal buttons, clasps, or zippers—they can create additional risks.

Supervisors must ensure that employees wear the appropriate PPE for the work condition that the employee is in at the time.

Supervisors should stop any employee from working if he or she is not wearing the approved gear for the job.

Employees should routinely check their PPE for wear and tear and replace items as needed.

Remember, PPE only works when it is worn and in good working condition!
