EHSDA Song of the Week: Talkin’ Bout New Orleans

EHS Daily Advisor spent the beginning of this week in New Orleans attending the National Safety Council (NSC) Safety Congress and Expo, so it feels appropriate to feature New Orleans’ own The Meters in the Song of the Week.

“Talkin’ Bout New Orleans” is a typically funky Meters jam, featured on the band’s sixth album Fire on the Bayou, which was released in July 1975. Although The Meters were renowned for their live performances and were opening for the Rolling Stones that summer, the band’s combination of funk and New Orleans sounds never quite clicked with radio or music buyers. Fire on the Bayou hit #179 on the Billboard Album Chart and #41 on the R&B chart.

Still, there was no denying the greatness of The Meters, who broke up in 1980 but reunited by the end of that decade. The band was later renamed the Funky Meters and continued playing with different members.
