EHSDA Song of the Week: Before the Water Gets Too High

EHS Daily Advisor’s Enviro, Social, & Governance Week is wrapping up, the work involved with ESG initiatives will continue on. The Song of the Week focuses on the “E” in ESG with “Before the Water Gets Too High” from New York City indie rock act Parquet Courts.

Included on the 2018 album Wide Awake!, the song examines how our society tends to kick environmental issues down the road.

“Glass barely bends before it cracks/Embedded down into our path/Paved in the crimson of our tracks/Without the chance of turning back/Before the water gets too high.”

Led by singer-guitarist Andrew Savage, Parquet Courts has released seven albums since 2011, the last one being 2021’s Sympathy for Life.” In an interview with NPR, Savage described “Before the Water Gets Too High” as “a pretty gloomy song, warning about a potential apocalypse scenario that we are all constantly distracting ourselves from.”
