NIOSH: Safety and Health Problems Associated with Moderately Cold Working Conditions

A new report from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) outlined recommendations to improve comfort for employees who work in moderately cold environments such as food preparation workers who may spend 8 hours or more in refrigerated rooms.

According to the report, many indoor workers can be negatively affected by cold work environments, including those in the food preparation and cold storage industries, supermarkets, or the transportation chain. Cold exposure can be problematic for workers with certain preexisting medical conditions and can also increase the chances of an injury or aggravate an existing injury. The NIOSH report details the types of exposures faced by employees in the case study and offers recommendations to improve the comfort and safety of workers in these environments. Read More
