UST Reporting Within 30 Days of Release
A leaking tank may be repaired if standard industry practices are followed. After completion of the repair, the tank must be tested within 30 days.
When testing the tank, use one of these methods:
- An industry-standard internal or tightness test
- Leak detection monitoring (but not the combination method of inventory control and tank tightness)
- Any other method approved by the appropriate authority

A cathodically protected tank must be tested within 6 months of a repair to ensure that the cathodic protection is working.
Damaged metal pipes may not be repaired and must be replaced. However, if the problem is a loose pipe, it may be tightened. Fiberglass-reinforced plastic pipes may be repaired in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions or national standards if tested (as in a tank repair) within 30 days.
No internal inspection is required under 40 CFR 280.33. Keep records of any repairs for as long as the tank is in service.
Within 45 Days of Release
Within 45 days of release confirmation or another reasonable period of time determined by the agency, owners and operators must submit the information collected about the site, including:
- Data on the nature and estimated quantity of release
- Data from available sources and/or site investigations concerning the following factors: surrounding populations, water quality, use and approximate locations of wells potentially affected by the release, subsurface soil conditions, locations of subsurface sewers, climatological conditions, and land use

- Results of the site check required under 40 CFR 280.62(a)(5)
- Results of the free product investigation required under 40 CFR 280.62(a)(6), to be used by owners and operators to determine whether free product must be recovered under 40 CFR 280.64
