Group Says Little Has Changed at Site of Deadly Texas Explosion

A government watchdog group says safety has not improved since a toxic chemical leak at a pesticide plant in Texas that killed four workers a year ago. Keep reading to find out the reasons behind the bleak assessment.

OSHA cited the DuPont plant in LaPorte, Texas, less than $300,000 in connection with the November 15, 2014, leak of 23,000 pounds of methyl mercaptan. The company was placed in OSHA’s Severe Violator Enforcement Program.

According to the Center for Effective Government, the facility had experienced safety problems in the years prior to the leak. The group cites reports filed with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in 2008 and after that, which showed “workers in the plant’s pesticide unit were repeatedly exposed to toxic chemicals at levels well above worker safety standards.” Read More
