According to the National Weather Service, peak tornado season is March through June, with 70% of all tornadoes occurring during this time period. This week, we feature “Tornadoes,” a 2004 song by Drive-By Truckers that details how a tornado hit the hometown of singer Patterson Hood.
Specifically, the song describes how Hood’s former band, Adam’s House Cat, was set to play a show in Hood’s hometown of Florence, Alabama. But the event was derailed after the town was struck by the aforementioned tornado, which one eyewitness said sounded like a train.
Adam’s House Cat never played another show, but Hood and bandmate Mike Cooley eventually formed Drive-By Truckers in 1996, reinventing Southern rock and forging a successful career that continues to this day.
